Prakash Karat, a leader of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), has emphasized the importance of strengthening ties with China to adeptly navigate a multipolar global landscape. While he agrees that India and China need not become allies, he advocates for improved relations to balance out the complexities introduced by Donald Trump's presidency.
In a candid interview, Karat highlighted that the Indo-US strategic alliance, particularly since the 2008 nuclear deal, places India in a tricky position with Trump's ongoing demands. He recalled the CPI(M)'s vehement opposition to the deal, viewing it as the foundation for a deeper US-India strategic alignment.
Karat argues for strategic autonomy as a way forward, resisting further military commitments to the US, such as purchasing arms or gas, which he believes do not align with India's interest. With the world evolving unpredictably under Trump's influence, Karat suggests cautious and autonomous policy decisions to safeguard India's global position.
