As the United States refocuses its policies towards the Western Hemisphere, Secretary of State Marco Rubio is set to tour three Caribbean countries this week. Central to his agenda will be weaning these nations off Venezuelan oil and addressing illegal immigration issues.
On his visit, Rubio will encourage Jamaica, Guyana, and Suriname to diversify their energy resources, especially following recent sanctions imposed by the Trump administration on Venezuelan oil exports. The visit coincides with heightened tensions over US tariffs on countries importing Venezuelan oil.
Rubio's agenda also spotlights the situation in Haiti, where international efforts to curb gang violence are underway. He continues to extend waivers on US foreign aid to support Haiti's security forces, which remain crucial amid ongoing challenges.
