US Secretary of State Marco Rubio engages with Indian and Pakistani leaders to de-escalate rising tensions. Emphasizing dialogue, Rubio reiterates US commitment to countering terrorism with India. Pakistan urged to cease support for terror groups amid recent skirmishes sparked by attacks in Jammu and Kashmir's Pahalgam.
Amid escalating tensions between India and Pakistan, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has stepped up diplomatic efforts to promote dialogue and de-escalation. In separate calls on Thursday with Indian External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and Pakistani Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif, Rubio emphasized the need for Pakistan to take concrete measures to end support for terrorist groups.
A State Department statement by Spokesperson Tammy Bruce underscored the urgency, stating Rubio reiterated condolences for the terrorist attack in Pahalgam, where 26 civilians were killed, and reaffirmed a commitment to combating terrorism alongside India. Jaishankar appreciated the US support and highlighted India's targeted response to cross-border terrorism.
In his conversation with Sharif, Rubio expressed sorrow over civilian casualties and urged Pakistan to participate in direct dialogue. The exchange followed India's Operation Sindoor military action targeting terror launchpads in Pakistan, after Pakistan's retaliatory border firing resulted in further casualties. US President Donald Trump's concern over the South Asian security situation was welcomed by Sharif, with both nations agreeing to stay in communication.
