In a strong rebuke aligning with the 50th anniversary of the 1975 Emergency, Congress leader and General Secretary (Communications) Jairam Ramesh sharply criticized the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for what he termed an 'Undeclared Emergency@11'. The Congress claims a systematic dismantling of democratic institutions over the past decade.
The accusations come as the BJP marks the anniversary, referred to as 'Samvidhaan Hatya Diwas,' spotlighting the debate over constitutional integrity. Ramesh outlined alleged transgressions ranging from undermining the judiciary, Constitutional bodies, and media, to federalism erosion, misuse of investigative agencies, and civil liberties crackdown.
The Congress leader contends that during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, the Indian populace chose to uphold the Constitution, denying the Prime Minister's call for a mandate to draft a new one. Accusations were bolstered by claims of MPs' arbitrary suspensions and committee bypasses, reflecting further concerns about parliamentary norms shredding.
