On Monday, Egyptians began casting their votes in the Senate election, targeting candidates for the country's advisory body. This election is crucial as it assists the significant lower body in reviewing and enacting legislation.
Voters, numbering around 63 million, had the opportunity to pick 200 representatives for the 300-seat Senate across more than 8,000 polling stations nationwide. Presidentially appointed members fill the remaining 100 seats. The results are anticipated on August 12.
This election follows the establishment of the Senate in 2019, amid widespread dissatisfaction over economic challenges and political reforms that critics argue extend President el-Sissi's power. Egyptians living abroad had their chance to vote earlier at consulates in 117 countries.
