Historic Shift: NDP Claims Victory in Saint Vincent Elections
The opposition New Democratic Party has declared victory in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines' recent elections, potentially ending the ruling Unity Labour Party's 24-year reign. Upon confirmation, this change would halt Prime Minister Ralph Gonsalves' lengthy tenure. Congratulations poured in from Jamaica and Taiwan.
The opposition New Democratic Party (NDP) of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines announced its victory in the recent elections, although official results were pending as of early Friday. This victory could potentially end the 24-year reign of the ruling Unity Labour Party (ULP), marking a significant political shift in the Caribbean nation.
Jamaican Prime Minister Andrew Holness conveyed his congratulations to NDP leader Godwin Friday via a post on X, commending the peaceful and democratic nature of the electoral process and highlighting the strong ties between Jamaica and Saint Vincent.
The potential change in power could have international implications, as Taiwan's ambassador, also offering congratulations, responded to the NDP's prior proposal to reevaluate Saint Vincent's diplomatic relationship with Taiwan in favor of closer ties with China. The NDP's election manifesto, however, did not mention cutting ties with Taipei.
