The Maharashtra civic polls have drawn fierce criticism from Uddhav Thackeray, the Shiv Sena (UBT) chief, who has accused the BJP-led administration of sabotaging democratic processes. Thackeray labeled the irregularities as an attempt to 'murder democracy' and called for voters to overthrow the 'corrupt' regime.
Joined by his cousin, Raj Thackeray, chief of the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena, they took issue with the State Election Commission (SEC) over various concerns, including the alleged removable ink used on voters' fingers. They demanded the resignation of the Election Commissioner, citing collusion with the government.
In a vigorous defense of democratic principles, Uddhav noted unprecedented election malpractices. With a backdrop of a highly contested election in Mumbai, the Thackeray cousins aim to control the civic body with a keen focus on 'Marathi pride,' against the backdrop of accusations of state power misuse favoring the BJP.
