Eldos Mathew Punnoose emphasized that self-determination should not be used to promote secession in democratic nations. He highlighted developmental challenges faced by the Global South and stressed the need for UN reform.
India has sharply criticized Pakistan for exploiting United Nations' forums to further its divisive goals, particularly on the subject of Jammu and Kashmir. In a strong statement, Eldos Mathew Punnoose, a counsellor in India's Permanent Mission to the UN, reiterated that the principle of self-determination should not be misused for secessionist motives in democratic and pluralistic societies.
Punnoose emphasized the necessity for member states to transcend narrow interests and work collaboratively, pointing out Pakistan's repetitive and baseless allegations. He also shed light on the unique developmental challenges faced by the Global South, calling for targeted action and stressing the need for UN reform to effectively address these issues.
Addressing the wider expectations from the United Nations during crucial times, Punnoose voiced concerns about the organization's ability to fulfill its role in maintaining peace, security, and promoting human rights. The critique questioned the UN's efficacy and credibility, underscoring the need for decisive intervention to alleviate global conflicts and suffering.
