The Rajya Sabha has renewed its panel of vice-chairpersons, naming six new members from various political parties including the BJP, Congress, AIADMK, and BJD. This came into effect starting April 15, as declared by Secretary General P C Mody in the House.
The newly constituted panel features Dinesh Sharma, S Phangnon Konyak, and Ghanshyam Tiwari representing the BJP; Phulo Devi Netam from Congress; M. Thambidurai from AIADMK; and Sasmit Patra from BJD. These members will step in to preside over sessions in the absence of the Chairman and Deputy Chairman.
While they serve in a role similar to that of the Chairperson in regulating debates and proceedings, these vice-chairpersons do not hold permanent positions and take turns leading the sessions as necessary, differing from the standing role of the Deputy Chairman.
