Senate Republicans Block Iran War Powers Resolution: A Clash Over Authorization
Senate Republicans blocked a Democratic effort to require Congressional authorization for the Iran conflict, despite edging closer to passage with support from some Republicans. Democrats argue conflict continues, while Republicans uphold Trump's decision as legal under his rights. The debate highlights partisan tension surrounding war powers.
In a narrow vote on Wednesday, Senate Republicans halted a Democratic-led initiative to demand Congressional authorization for military actions against Iran.
The bill, which sponsored by Senator Jeff Merkley of Oregon, found unexpected support from three Republicans but failed to secure the necessary votes to advance.
This marks the seventh failed attempt this year. Democrats dispute President Trump's claim that the conflict has ceased, calling for continuous resolution proposals until Congressional authorization is obtained or the conflict ends.
