In a bold move to address persistent infrastructure challenges, Punjab Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema unveiled the 'Mukh Mantri Street Light Yojana' during the state budget presentation for 2025-26. The initiative seeks to install 2.50 lakh street lights throughout the state next year.
Minister Cheema highlighted the dire need for improved street lighting in Punjab, emphasizing that the dream of 'Badalda Punjab'—a transformative vision—remains incomplete if towns and villages are left in the dark. The scheme, backed by a significant Rs 115 crore allocation, aims to illuminate neighborhoods, enhancing safety and security for residents.
The project employs an innovative model, reducing costs by utilizing existing domestic electricity connections while deducting equivalent consumption units from household bills. This practical approach is part of broader efforts to enhance Punjab's power infrastructure, including new substations and transmission lines.
