Devastation at the Border: Lives Shattered by Conflict
Koon Kantho fled her home in Kantharalak, Thailand, after shelling from Cambodia left it in ruins. The conflict resulted in 40 deaths and displaced 300,000 people before a ceasefire was achieved. The Thai government estimates reconstruction costs at over 10 billion baht and plans a budget to assist affected residents.
After a nearby Thai convenience store was struck by shelling from Cambodia, Koon Kantho quickly packed essentials and evacuated with her family. Her home in Sisaket province was later destroyed.
The five-day border conflict ended with a ceasefire, leaving 40 dead and 300,000 displaced. Thailand suffered significant damage, costing over 10 billion baht, according to Finance Minister Pichai Chunhavajira.
Koon, upon returning, found her home in ruins. She expressed hope for governmental aid, stating, "It's all gone, nothing is left." The damage underscores the serious impact of the heaviest fighting in over a decade.
