Turkey's Ambitious Push for Global Electrification: A Vision for COP31
Turkey is set to advocate for a global target of meeting 35% of the world's energy demand with electricity by 2035 at the upcoming COP31 climate summit. The initiative aims to reduce fossil fuel consumption by transitioning industries and households to electric power. Turkey seeks to build international support for this voluntary target.
In a bold move, Turkey is poised to champion a global initiative at the forthcoming COP31 climate summit, aiming to satisfy 35% of global energy needs with electricity by 2035, as announced by this year's summit president. This effort seeks to curb the reliance on fossil fuels.
As a prelude to hosting COP31, Turkey plans to divert industries, transport, and heating from oil, coal, and gas towards electric alternatives like industrial furnaces and electric cars. The goal is to shift the current 20% electricity usage to significantly higher global adoption.
The Turkish Environment Minister, Murat Kurum, indicated that the voluntary target is set to shield economies from fluctuating energy markets by forming a coalition of supportive nations. This summit will witness Turkey as the host, while Australia will conduct the U.N. negotiations.
