Portugal is making a triumphant comeback to the Formula 1 calendar for the 2027 and 2028 seasons, following a notable absence. The Algarve International Circuit, located near Portimão, has been chosen to replace the Dutch Grand Prix, marking its return after previous inclusion in 2020 and 2021 amid the pandemic.
The deal revives the excitement of Formula 1 racing in Portugal, which first began in Porto in 1958. Although Estoril served as the venue from 1984 to 1996, the sport has not been a regular feature in the country until now. The two-year agreement signals a renewed interest and investment in Portuguese motorsports.
Formula 1 president Stefano Domenicali expressed optimism about the event's return, noting the Algarve circuit's reputation for thrilling races that energize fans. The site was notably where Lewis Hamilton broke Michael Schumacher's record for all-time wins with his 92nd victory in 2021.
