Ukrainian Grandmaster Steps In: Muzychuk Replaces Humpy at 2026 Women's Candidates Tournament
Ukrainian grandmaster Anna Muzychuk will replace Koneru Humpy in the 2026 Women's Candidates tournament after Humpy withdrew due to safety concerns amid Middle East conflicts. The event remains scheduled in Cyprus despite offers to relocate, with FIDE maintaining its plans for the original location.
Ukrainian grandmaster Anna Muzychuk has been named as the replacement for Koneru Humpy in the upcoming 2026 Women's Candidates tournament. This development follows Humpy's withdrawal, announced on Sunday by the International Chess Federation (FIDE), due to escalating safety concerns linked to the ongoing Middle East conflict.
The tournament, slated for March 28 to April 16 in Cyprus, faced a setback with Humpy's withdrawal. Despite this, FIDE remains committed to the original venue. In a statement, FIDE explained that Muzychuk's entry adheres to existing tournament regulations, offering the spot to the next highest finisher from the Women's Events Series who hadn't yet qualified.
Affected by U.S.-Israeli strikes on Iran, the Middle East tensions have disrupted travel and led to cancellations of major events. German tech billionaire Wadim Rosenstein offered to host the tournament in Germany, but despite security concerns, FIDE CEO Emil Sutovsky confirmed that the event will continue as planned in Cyprus.
