Advocaat's Return: The Oldest Coach to Lead Curacao in World Cup History
Veteran coach Dick Advocaat, at 78, returns to lead Curacao in the World Cup, becoming the oldest coach in tournament history. He takes over after Fred Rutten resigned amid player pressure and a sponsor's call for Advocaat's reinstatement. Curacao faces Ecuador, Germany, and Ivory Coast in Group E.
Dick Advocaat, at the age of 78, is set to make history as the oldest coach to lead a team in the World Cup, returning to helm Curacao next month. His appointment follows the resignation of Fred Rutten amidst controversy and alleged pressure from players and the federation's main sponsor, leading to a quick reinstatement for Advocaat.
The Curacao football association confirmed at a press conference that Advocaat would lead the team after Rutten stepped down, citing player discontent and a campaign tarnishing his reputation. Rutten's resignation comes despite initial support from the federation president, who firmly denied any player coup.
Under Advocaat's leadership, Curacao is set for its World Cup debut, joining Group E alongside Ecuador, Germany, and the Ivory Coast. Advocaat has previously managed the Netherlands in the 1994 and 2006 tournaments. The Caribbean island will be the smallest country by population ever to compete in the World Cup, a milestone in its sporting history.
