The British Open, golf's oldest major, will shift from its traditional July dates in 2028 to avoid coinciding with the Los Angeles Olympics, the R&A announced on Monday.

For the first time in modern history, the Open will conclude on August 6. The venue for this event remains unconfirmed. According to Mark Darbon, Chief Executive of The R&A, the decision was made in cooperation with relevant organizations and partners, ensuring the Olympic golf competitions were accommodated.

Darbon expressed gratitude for the constructive negotiations with stakeholders, emphasizing that setting the dates now aids in future golf calendar planning. Notably, the tournament will return to its customary mid-July slot in 2029. The AIG Women's Open and Senior Open will also take place in August 2028, per the R&A.
