Kenya Airport Workers End Strike After Assurance on Lease Plan
Workers at Kenya's main airport ended a strike after the government assured them that plans to lease the airport to India's Adani Group would require union approval. The strike caused cancellations and delays, as workers feared job cuts. Both parties agreed to review the proposal within 10 days.
Workers at Kenya's main international airport ended a day-long strike on Wednesday after receiving assurances from the government that a proposed lease to an Indian company would only proceed with union approval. Their strike had earlier caused cancellations and delays for hundreds of passengers.
Union officials said the government and the Kenya Aviation Workers Union will review the lease proposal within 10 days. The agreement includes a provision that no one who participated in the strike will be punished.
The Adani Group, led by billionaire Gautam Adani, did not respond to requests for comment. While operations resumed to normal, the strike highlighted concerns over potential job cuts and non-Kenyan workers.
