The recent attacks on Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation personnel have prompted Maharashtra Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik to consider deploying security marshals on buses to Karnataka. This measure follows the suspension of bus services to Karnataka due to rising tensions.
The incidents have heightened the ongoing conflict around the border district of Belagavi, which houses a significant Marathi-speaking population seeking affiliation with Maharashtra. Pro-Kannada activists strongly oppose this demand, exacerbating regional tensions.
State officials are currently in dialogue with their counterparts in Karnataka to resolve the situation. Maharashtra's ministers emphasize the vital importance of passenger security while stressing that the suspension of bus services should not inconvenience citizens.
