Tanzania Launches Long-Awaited Bagamoyo Port Project
Tanzania plans to begin constructing the long-delayed Bagamoyo port in December, after resolving contract disputes with foreign developers. The port will initially feature 14 berths and is part of a larger economic zone project. It aims to accommodate up to 25,000-container ships, enhancing maritime capacity in East Africa.
Tanzania has announced its intention to begin construction of the long-awaited Bagamoyo port in December, marking an end to a decade-long delay due to contentious contract terms with foreign developers.
The ambitious project will commence with 14 of its planned 28 berths, according to government spokesperson Gerson Msigwa. The port, located approximately 75 km north of Dar es Salaam, is part of a broader special economic zone initiative involving industrial parks and transport infrastructure.
This development follows renewed negotiations spearheaded by President Samia Suluhu Hassan to revive the once-stalled $10 billion project. When completed, Bagamoyo port will have a depth of up to 20 meters, allowing it to accommodate larger ships than any other port in eastern Africa, thereby vastly improving the region's maritime capacity.
