A segment of the crucial Vikramshila Setu bridge in Bihar crashed into the Ganga River, leading to a significant traffic halt early Monday. Officials confirmed no casualties were reported despite the chaos that ensued following the collapse. The 4.7-kilometre-long bridge is a vital link between Bhagalpur and Naugachia.
Authorities responded swiftly by arranging boats and steamers to transport people across the river, while warning the public to use alternative routes via Munger. The Bihar State Bridge Construction Corporation revealed they have initiated temporary measures and collaborated with military officials for additional support.
An engineering expert committee has been tasked to probe the cause of the collapse. The district has been previously alerted to structural weaknesses via social media and inspections. A parallel four-lane bridge aims for completion by December to accommodate Vikramshila Setu's high traffic volume.
