CBSE Discards Merit Lists to Avoid Unhealthy Competition

CBSE has stopped issuing merit lists and divisions for Class 10 and 12 exams to prevent unhealthy competition among students. Instead, merit certificates will be given to the top 0.1% performers, available in Digi-Locker. Girls outperformed boys, with over 93% of Class 10 students passing and 88.39% for Class 12.

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) announced that it will no longer release merit lists or divisions for Class 10 and Class 12 exam results. The move aims to reduce unhealthy competition among students, according to a statement from CBSE Examination Controller Sanyam Bhardwaj.

Tuesday saw the release of results for both classes, with a noteworthy performance from female students. Over 93% of Class 10 students passed, while the pass percentage for Class 12 stood at 88.39%. Girls outperformed boys in both examinations.

Instead of merit lists, the top 0.1% of students in each subject will receive merit certificates available in their Digi-Locker accounts. This policy continues CBSE's approach adopted during the COVID-19 pandemic when traditional assessments were disrupted, leading to a permanent change last year.
