Singapore Prime Minister Lawrence Wong announced on Sunday the launch of a new Islamic college designed to nurture future Islamic leaders within the multi-ethnic nation. He emphasized support for the community's efforts to remain modern and progressive while preserving their distinctive customs.
The Singapore College of Islamic Studies, an initiative eight years in the making, was first proposed in 2016 by the then Minister-in-charge of Muslim Affairs, Yaacob Ibrahim. Its mission is to train religious scholars and teachers, known as asatizah, to provide relevant religious guidance within Singapore's multi-religious context.
During his first National Day Rally, Wong pledged to continue the work of his predecessors in collaborating with Malay and Muslim leaders on issues such as education, countering radicalization, and uplifting vulnerable segments. He assured that the Malay/Muslim community would benefit from the nation's progress and play a significant role in shaping its future.
