The largest floating solar project in central and north India, generating 90 MW of energy, has been successfully commissioned at Omkareshwar in Madhya Pradesh, a state minister confirmed.

The Rs 646-crore Omkareshwar Floating Solar Project, commissioned on August 8, was developed under the Union Ministry of Renewable Energy, according to state Renewable Energy Minister Rakesh Shukla. He noted that it stands as the biggest solar park in the country and the largest floating solar project in the region.

The project, executed by SJVN Green Energy Limited (SGEL), a wholly-owned subsidiary of SJVN, has ramped up SJVN's total installed capacity to 2466.50 MW. It is anticipated to generate 196.5 million units of electricity in the first year and 4,629.3 million units over 25 years. The project is also set to significantly reduce carbon emissions by 2.3 lakh tonnes, supporting the central government's mission of achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2070. Additionally, it will aid in water conservation by curbing water evaporation, Shukla said. Developed through competitive tariff bidding on a Build Own and Operate basis, the floating power plant will operate for 25 years at Rs 3.26 per unit and is located on the backwaters of Omkareshwar dam.
