Ontario Premier Doug Ford announces a 25% increase in electricity charges for 1.5 million Americans due to the ongoing trade war initiated by U.S. President Donald Trump. In a bold move against the ongoing trade pressures from the United States, Ontario Premier Doug Ford has announced a significant increase in electricity charges for American consumers. Effective immediately, a surcharge of 25% will be applied, directly impacting 1.5 million U.S. customers relying on Ontario's power supply.
This decision comes in the wake of heightened trade tensions stoked by U.S. President Donald Trump, who imposed tariffs on America's major trading partners, including Canada. In response, Ontario intends to bolster its local economy, generating considerable daily revenue projected between CA$300,000 to CA$400,000, which will support wages and growth in the province.
Ford emphasizes that these measures are retaliatory, aimed at pressing the American administration to reconsider its stance. As the Premier warned, if tensions continue to heighten, Ontario might take more severe steps, including potentially cutting off electricity entirely, a scenario that risks further destabilizing cross-border relations.
