In a significant political development, Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh submitted a breach of privilege notice to Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankar. The notice, directed against Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju, accused him of misleading the House concerning remarks allegedly made by Karnataka's Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar about the Constitution.
The controversy erupted when Rijiju claimed that Shivakumar had made derogatory statements about the Constitution, prompting Ramesh to seek privilege proceedings. Ramesh's notice highlighted that Shivakumar had denied making such statements. The alleged comments, according to Ramesh, were both false and misleading, warranting a breach of privilege and contempt of the House.
In response, Shivakumar accused the BJP of distorting his remarks and consulted his legal team for further action. He emphasized that the issue was being twisted for political gain as several constitutional amendments followed judicial pronouncements on reservation policies. Meanwhile, Kiren Rijiju continued to call for Shivakumar's resignation, challenging the Leader of Opposition to act.
