Parliament Debates Extension of President's Rule in Manipur Amid Ongoing Instability

The Lok Sabha engaged in a crucial debate on Wednesday, reviewing a resolution introduced by Union Minister of State for Home Affairs, Nityanand Rai, aiming to prolong President's Rule in Manipur for half a year, effective from August 13, 2025. This step comes in the wake of heightened political volatility following N Biren Singh's departure as Chief Minister.

President Droupadi Murmu, had previously decreed President's Rule in the state on February 13, 2025, following a comprehensive report from the state's governor. This political maneuver, facilitated under Article 356 of the Constitution, was necessitated after long-standing ethnic clashes and unrest threatened administrative stability in the region.

Simultaneously, the Rajya Sabha has acknowledged a statutory resolution contemplating an extension of this rule until February 13, 2026. As the discourse unfolded, Home Minister Amit Shah articulated that the ethnic strife, ignited by a controversial High Court decision, was neither a governmental mishap nor an act of terrorism but an ethnic vendetta arising from legal misinterpretation, counteracted swiftly by the Supreme Court's intervention.
