In a move set to revolutionize Indian agriculture, Union Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan has hailed the proposed Seed Act 2026 as a 'historic step' to uphold farmers' rights, seed quality, and systemic transparency. This ambitious legislation, slated for introduction in the upcoming Budget Session, seeks to replace the outdated 1966 act.
The new act will introduce a nationwide seed traceability system, empowering farmers with full disclosure about seed origins through QR codes. Not only does this move aim to eradicate counterfeit and substandard seeds, but it also threatens severe penalties against fraudulent entities. Offenders could face fines soaring up to Rs 30 lakh or other stringent punishments.
Chouhan assured that the traditional seed-exchange practices among farmers will remain unaffected. Comprehensive registration of seed companies will ensure that only authorized operators can supply seeds, thereby enhancing the credibility of seed sources. The policy underscores the vital role of public institutions, domestic companies, and the fair evaluation of foreign seeds, aiming for an inclusive improvement in seed quality nationwide.
