Tamil Nadu Pharma Firm Faces Closure After Toxic Cough Syrup Scandal

The manufacturing license of Sresan Pharmaceutical in Tamil Nadu has been revoked due to the production of a toxic cough syrup containing Diethylene Glycol, associated with child fatalities in Madhya Pradesh. Multiple violations in manufacturing and laboratory practices were discovered, and the company's owner has been arrested.

The Tamil Nadu government has revoked the manufacturing license of Sresan Pharmaceutical, a company involved in producing adulterated cough syrup. The syrup, Coldrif, was found to contain 48.6% Diethylene Glycol (DEG), a deadly substance linked to children's deaths in Madhya Pradesh.

State Drug Control Department officials discovered over 300 critical violations, including a lack of adherence to good manufacturing and laboratory practices. This led to the arrest of the company's owner, G Ranganathan, by a special investigation team from Madhya Pradesh.

In a related development, the Enforcement Directorate has also conducted a raid on Sresan Pharmaceuticals as part of a money laundering investigation. The state government is now expanding inspections to other pharmaceutical companies across Tamil Nadu.
