In a significant healthcare initiative, Jharkhand's Health Minister Irfan Ansari revealed plans to establish a bone marrow transplant unit in Ranchi. This move aims to cater to the needs of thalassemia patients, with the government also considering financing transplants outside the state.
Ansari outlined these plans in response to a query during an assembly session. The decision comes in the wake of unfortunate incidents where five thalassemia patients contracted HIV after blood transfusions, raising serious health concerns.
Alongside building the new facility, the state is compiling comprehensive data on thalassemia patients. The Health Minister highlighted that the unit will be set up at Sadar Hospital in Ranchi with an investment of Rs 7 crore, and potential support for transplants costing around Rs 14 lakh.
