In a bold move, Spanish newspaper La Vanguardia has decided to halt its activities on the social media platform X, previously known as Twitter. The newspaper issued a statement on Thursday declaring it will no longer publish tweets or maintain accounts on the platform.
La Vanguardia criticized X for becoming a hotbed of conspiracy theories and misinformation, emphasizing that these ideas gain traction due to ineffective moderation. The newspaper expressed concern over the viral spread of content that undermines human rights, illustrating how such narratives captivate users to boost advertising revenues.
While pulling back from X, La Vanguardia stressed it would continue monitoring the platform to inform its readers of significant developments. This announcement follows similar actions by other media, including The Guardian, which withdrew from X after denouncing owner Elon Musk's political influence.
