Afghanistan Upholds Sovereignty, Denies Foreign Military Presence

At a New Delhi press conference, Afghanistan’s Foreign Minister Muttaqi stated unequivocally that Afghanistan rejects any foreign military presence, emphasizing the nation's sovereignty. He affirmed Afghanistan's commitment to non-aggression and highlighted discussions on regional security and development, while also expressing gratitude for diplomatic engagements with India and ongoing humanitarian support.

Afghanistan's Foreign Minister Mawlawi Amir Khan Muttaqi firmly declared that Afghanistan will not permit any foreign military forces at its Bagram base. Speaking at a press conference in New Delhi, Muttaqi emphasized Afghanistan's steadfast stance on sovereignty, disallowing military uniforms on its soil. Diplomacy is the only channel for foreign relations, he asserted.

Addressing regional security issues, Muttaqi reiterated Afghanistan's commitment to ensuring its territory remains uninvolved in threats to other countries. A joint statement by India and other nations criticized foreign military infrastructure presence in Afghanistan as harmful to regional peace. This stems from discussions at the Moscow Format talks in Russia.

Muttaqi expressed eagerness for constructive international relations, underpinned by Islamic values. During his visit, Indian External Affairs Minister Jaishankar presented humanitarian aid to Afghanistan, reflecting India's long-standing support. Muttaqi's visit is the first high-level delegation visit to India since the Taliban's takeover in 2021, marking a significant step in diplomatic ties.
