Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, on Friday, directed strong criticism at West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee regarding the recent rape and murder of a woman doctor in Kolkata. Patel emphasized the need for decisive action rather than mere rhetoric to ensure women's safety.
In a lengthy post on X, Patel stated that safety is a fundamental human right, not a political matter. He highlighted Gujarat's proactive approach in addressing such crimes, citing examples of rapid justice in the state, including the recent swift convictions in the Pandesara and Puna cases.
Gujarat's Minister of State for Home, Harsh Sanghavi, echoed Patel's sentiments, affirming that stringent laws like the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POSCO) Act, if enforced vigorously, can ensure timely justice. The Banerjee administration in West Bengal has been under pressure following the incident, prompting them to pass a law with harsh penalties for rape.
