Southeast Asia Urged to Expedite South China Sea Conduct Code

Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. called on Southeast Asian leaders and China to expedite the creation of a conduct code for the South China Sea at a regional summit. The plea comes amidst accusations from Manila of harassment and intimidation by Beijing.
President Marcos emphasized the need for substantive progress, urging all parties to manage differences. Tensions between China and the U.S.-allied Philippines have sparked regional concerns about potential U.S. involvement due to defense treaty obligations.
The summit also addressed Myanmar's civil unrest post-2021 coup and ASEAN's struggle to manage the crisis. Concerns over supply chain resilience and cybersecurity in Southeast Asia were also discussed during the meeting.
