On Tuesday, a comprehensive shutdown took hold in the hill regions of Manipur, as educational institutions, markets, and transport services were brought to a standstill. This 13-hour shutdown, initiated by the Kuki-Zo Council, served as a mark of grief and solidarity following the violent demise of several individuals in Jiribam.
Authorities reported a deadly engagement between insurgents and security forces on Monday, where 10 suspected militants perished in a fierce altercation with the police and CRPF in Jiribam district. However, a government source placed the fatality count at 11. Despite the tense situation, no major incidents were reported during the shutdown across Kuki-populated areas.
Community organizations, including the Kuki Students' Organisation and the Zomi Students' Federation, called for robust investigations into the incident, criticizing the CRPF's actions and demanding accountability. The situation underscores the ongoing ethnic turmoil in Manipur, with appeals for justice and protection remaining at the forefront.
