India is set to form friendship groups with the parliaments of various countries, as Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla announced on Monday. This move is part of a broader strategy to bolster parliamentary diplomacy on the global stage.
During recent multi-party delegations to world capitals, requests for such inter-parliamentary friendship groups emerged, particularly following Operation Sindoor, highlighting India's determination to combat terrorism originating from Pakistan. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has shown interest in institutionalizing these groups to further India's international partnerships.
Meanwhile, Birla emphasized the adoption of technology for enhancing transparency and accountability within parliamentary committees. Addressing the National Conference of Estimates Committees, he noted the importance of consensus-driven recommendations in improving governance. Maharashtra's success in adopting committee recommendations was highlighted, alongside plans to hold regular conferences and training sessions for parliamentary committees.
