In a groundbreaking move, the Delhi government has sanctioned a proposal to permit women to work night shifts in shops and commercial establishments, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta revealed on Tuesday. This policy seeks to enhance women's workforce participation and establish Delhi as a non-stop business center.
Hailing the initiative as 'historic,' Gupta stated it marks a major step towards women's economic empowerment and self-reliance. The Chief Minister assured that stringent safety and welfare measures would be implemented for women working during night hours.
The policy requires employers to obtain written consent from female employees for night shifts and demands the provision of transport, CCTV surveillance, security personnel, as well as essential amenities. Amendments to the Delhi Shops and Establishments Act, 1954, are involved, which would formally allow night work for women once approved by the Lieutenant Governor.
