In a significant ruling on Monday, the Supreme Court granted bail to Ajay Kumar Nayyar, accused of deceiving a businessman by impersonating the nephew of Union Home Minister Amit Shah. Nayyar has been in custody for more than four years, with the trial expected to take considerable time.

A bench comprising Justices J K Maheshwari and Vijay Bishnoi highlighted the prolonged detention of Nayyar, particularly given the offense involves Sections 419 and 420, with the maximum sentence being seven years. The ongoing trial has seen only partial progress despite charges being framed in 2022.

Meanwhile, Additional Solicitor General Vikramjit Banerjee, representing the Delhi government, contested the bail plea. The Delhi High Court previously rejected the plea, citing the gravity of the allegations, including possible life imprisonment charges under Sections 467 and 471 of the IPC.
