The Tamil Nadu police registered a case on Friday against 113 individuals, including prominent BJP members, involved in protesting at Thiruparankundram hill. Among those booked were BJP state president Nainar Nagenthran and senior party leader H Raja. Their protest, centered around the lighting of a ceremonial lamp, led to their temporary detention.
A Madurai bench of the Madras High Court had previously authorized the lighting of the lamp at Thiruparankundram hill. Furthermore, the court revoked earlier prohibitory orders restricting access to the area. In defiance, police halted BJP members, leading to a standoff and subsequent arrests.
On Friday morning, local police filed cases citing several charges, including unlawful assembly and criminal intimidation. Around 300 protesters were detained, sparking tensions as they were eventually released. These developments highlight the legal confrontations amid religious and administrative disputes in the region.
