Amid the ongoing Karthigai Deepam lamp controversy, the Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) has criticized the Tamil Nadu government's 'anti-Hindu' stance. The situation escalated after local authorities allegedly stopped devotees from lighting a traditional lamp at a hilltop temple in Madurai, resulting in several arrests, including that of Tamil Nadu BJP chief Nainar Nagenthran.
The arrests took place despite a Madras High Court directive permitting the ritual. VHP spokesperson Vinod Bansal condemned this as an infringement on constitutional rights and a contempt of the judiciary. He urged the central government to safeguard Hindu rights and uphold the rule of law in the region.
The issue has reached the apex court, with the Tamil Nadu government challenging the Madras High Court's order. Meanwhile, the controversy has also stirred debates in the Lok Sabha, with DMK and BJP leaders clashing over accusations of igniting communal tensions.
