Unidentified Drones Trigger Investigation at French Nuclear Submarine Base
French authorities are probing possible drone incursions over a nuclear submarine base on the Atlantic coast. The suspected flights reportedly occurred Thursday evening. Despite rumors, no shots were fired, though security measures were enacted. Military and on-site personnel provided varying accounts of activity.
French authorities have launched an investigation following reports of drones sighted over a nuclear submarine base off the Atlantic coast, a prosecutor from Rennes disclosed.
Jean-Marie Blin, responsible for military affairs, confirmed sightings began at 7 p.m. Thursday and continued until 1 a.m. Friday. While Blin refuted claims that gendarmes fired at the drones, he did state precautionary measures were implemented. Drone activity of unidentified origin has caused disruptions in European airspace recently, with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen labeling these actions as 'hybrid warfare.' Russia has dismissed allegations of involvement.
The submarines at the Ile Longue base, equipped with ballistic missiles and nuclear warheads, were at risk during the incident. Blin stressed that investigations aim to determine the authenticity of the drone reports, which vary in seriousness and credibility among gendarmes and military officers at the scene.
