The Himachal Pradesh Assembly has deferred its decision on the Tenancy and Land Reforms (Amendment) Bill, 2025, sending it to a Select Committee for further scrutiny. This move came after BJP's Randhir Sharma proposed the referral amid a broader legislative discussion, leading to agreement across party lines.
Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu endorsed the bipartisan approach, with Speaker Kuldeep Singh Pathania facilitating the committee's formation. It comprises members from both the ruling party and the opposition to ensure a comprehensive evaluation of the Bill, expected to return for consideration during the Budget Session.
Introduced by Revenue Minister Jagat Singh Negi, the amendment sparked debate over its potential impact on rural real estate, notably allowing rural houses to lease for ten years without requiring Section 118 permissions. The prior BJP government had adjusted these rules for urban areas, and the current amendments aim to extend similar provisions to rural regions.
