Minority Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju announced on Friday that the deadline for Waqf property registration on the UMEED portal remains unchanged. Despite calls for extension, the minister emphasized adherence to the timeline mandated by law and upheld by the Supreme Court. Recognizing the concerns of mutawallis, caretaker penalties will be waived for three months.
Rijiju reported 1.51 lakh properties had been registered by Friday morning, with some states excelling in their compliance. The UMEED portal, launched on June 6, aims to create a comprehensive digital record of Waqf properties, with registration required within six months, concluding on December 6, 2025.
While acknowledging challenges faced by some states, such as technical delays and paperwork issues, Rijiju reiterated that legal extensions are not viable unless approved by relevant Waqf tribunals. The ministry stressed its commitment to modernizing Waqf management for the benefit of minority communities.
