In an unprecedented turn of events, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla has not ruled out imposing 'exemplary punishment' over allegations of e-cigarette use within the House, emphasizing the imperative of upholding the Parliament's dignity.
The complaint, filed by BJP member Anurag Thakur, alleges that a member of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) was 'openly using' an e-cigarette during parliamentary proceedings, despite a nationwide ban on such devices.
Birla confirmed that the issue is under investigation and will be presented to an appropriate committee for further action. He warned that the breach of decorum might result in the loss of membership for the involved member.
