The Kremlin announced on Thursday that the United States has yet to respond to President Vladimir Putin's idea of an informal one-year extension of the New START treaty, the last nuclear arms pact standing between Moscow and Washington, which is set to expire shortly.
Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov commented on U.S. President Donald Trump's statements, noting Trump's preference for a more comprehensive nuclear arms deal that includes China. As of now, Beijing has not indicated any interest in participating in such discussions.
The lack of response from the U.S. comes as the expiration date of the treaty draws near, adding urgency to diplomatic negotiations aimed at maintaining strategic nuclear stability between the two major powers.
