The Election Commission is set to roll out QR code-based identity cards at counting centres to bolster security against unauthorised entry during vote counting for upcoming assembly elections in five states, according to an official announcement. This system is slated for implementation on May 4, enhancing the integrity of the electoral process.
The initiative, targeting assembly polls in West Bengal, Assam, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and Puducherry, along with bypolls in seven constituencies, aims to establish a robust, three-layer security framework. The process starts with manual verification of identity cards at the first two checkpoints, progressing to a compulsory QR code scan at the innermost security zone.
Ensuring seamless execution, Chief Electoral Officers, District Election Officers, and Returning Officers have been instructed to deploy well-trained personnel. Meanwhile, media access protocols remain consistent, with accredited journalists gaining entry through previously issued authority letters. Separate media centres will also support press coverage.
