Ex-Chinese Defense Ministers Sentenced to Death Over Graft
Two former Chinese defense ministers, Wei Fenghe and Li Shangfu, have been sentenced to death with a two-year reprieve for graft. Both were expelled from the Communist Party in 2024. Wei served as minister from 2018 to 2023, while Li briefly succeeded him before facing charges.
Both Wei Fenghe and Li Shangfu, who served as China's defense ministers, have been handed death sentences with a two-year reprieve on charges of corruption, according to state media. The judgment underscores the significant anti-corruption drive in China's political landscape under President Xi Jinping's leadership.
Wei Fenghe, a senior figure in the military, held the post of Defense Minister from 2018 to 2023. His successor, Li Shangfu, was an aerospace engineer and commanded significant responsibilities, including heading the People’s Liberation Army's Missile Force. Despite being selected by Xi Jinping himself, Li was soon expelled from both the ministry and the Communist Party.
This marks a dramatic rise and fall, highlighting the strict measures enforced by the ruling Communist Party against corruption within its ranks. As the global community watches, these developments are seen as part of President Xi's ongoing campaign to consolidate control and ensure loyalty within China's military hierarchy.
