Tensions Rise as Dutch Frigate Navigates Taiwan Strait
China dispatched naval and air assets to monitor the Dutch frigate HNLMS De Ruyter as it navigated the Taiwan Strait. The move comes after accusations of illegal entry into the Paracel Islands by the same vessel. The Netherlands maintains its ship is operating under international law.
The Chinese military announced on Friday that it deployed naval and air resources to keep a close watch on the Dutch frigate HNLMS De Ruyter as it passed through the Taiwan Strait. Authorities stated they managed the situation meticulously.
Just last week, Beijing criticized the same frigate, accusing it of illegally intruding into the Paracel Islands area within the contested South China Sea. The Netherlands responded by affirming the ship's journey through the South China Sea was for diplomatic, security, and economic reasons, all conducted under international law. The People's Liberation Army Eastern Theater Command highlighted that the frigate has been active in the Paracel Islands since May 27.
The PLA Eastern Theater Command remains vigilant to protect China's sovereignty and ensure regional peace, according to spokesperson Xu Chenghua. Attempts to contact a Dutch navy spokesperson for comment were unsuccessful.
