Tensions Escalate in Kashmir as Protesters Clash with Authorities
In Pakistan-administered Kashmir, 11 people died and over 70 were injured during clashes between police and protesters from a banned civil society alliance. The unrest, linked to a protest against reserved legislative seats for refugees, saw the use of firearms and led to mass arrests amid rising tensions.
In a chilling confrontation, 11 individuals lost their lives and more than 70 sustained injuries in Pakistan-administered Kashmir during skirmishes ahead of a protest organized by a barred civil society alliance. The protest, scheduled for Tuesday, opposes the reservation of legislative seats for refugees.
Police Commissioner Sardar Waheed Khan reported that tensions flared as Joint Awami Action Committee supporters gathered at a hospital morgue following a member's death in police firing. Authorities claim the action was necessary for law enforcement, while protesters argue it was an unwarranted crackdown.
The protest is particularly focused on the allocation of 12 refugee-reserved seats in the upcoming regional elections on July 27. The JAAC, recently designated as a proscribed group, has been at the forefront of demonstrations against rising living costs in the region, resulting in violent clashes with security forces.
