Kashmir on Edge: Clashes and Crackdowns Ignite Tensions
Protests erupted in Pakistan-administered Kashmir, leading to clashes with security forces and a general strike. The unrest followed authorities' crackdown on a banned civil society alliance, the Joint Awami Action Committee, as they protested election seat reservations and demanded rights.
Pakistan-administered Kashmir witnessed turmoil as clashes erupted between protesters and security forces, bringing cities to a halt. The unrest stemmed from a general strike call by the recently proscribed Joint Awami Action Committee (JAAC), which objected to election seat reservations for refugees outside Kashmir.
In Muzaffarabad and other regions, streets were vacated, and in Rawalakot, clashes on Sunday night resulted in 11 fatalities. Authorities have responded with a harsh crackdown, initiating sedition cases against four leaders of the JAAC and placing a bounty on their arrest after the group's ban.
Human rights group Amnesty International condemned the situation, highlighting the severe response by authorities, including internet shutdowns and arrests, reflecting worsening rights conditions in the region. Calls for dialogue and rights recognition resonate among residents amid the ongoing discord in this contested territory.
